Proprietary Screws: Apple often uses pentalobe or six-sided screws shaped like a Jewish Star of David. If you don't own a "Jewdriver" you can't open their laptops. Most people don't own one, even observant Jews. Ask your Rabbi!
Glued-in Components: Many components, especially batteries, are glued in place, making them difficult to remove and replace without specialized tools and knowledge. This increases the risk of damage during disassembly. I would have to use a heat gun or slather everything in flammable liquids or both! Batteries start to go bad after three years so this really makes me mad.
Soldered Components: RAM and storage are often soldered directly to the logic board, making upgrades or replacements impossible without advanced micro-soldering skills. If your laptop breaks then nobody can rescue your data because they can't take the data chip out. Apple will say "Well you should have paid every month for our cloud backup."
Parts Pairing: Apple has implemented software restrictions that pair specific components (like displays or batteries) to the device's logic board. Replacing a paired part with a genuine Apple part from another device can result in reduced functionality or warning messages. Messages that make me look like a rip off artist.
Lack of Repair Manuals: Historically, Apple has not readily provided detailed repair manuals to the public, making it challenging for individuals or independent repair shops to perform repairs correctly. (This is changing somewhat with their Self Service Repair program.)
Limited Access to Genuine Parts: Until recently, Apple tightly controlled the distribution of genuine parts, making it difficult for independent repair shops to source them. Some repair shops even pay people in China to "dumpster dive" outside factories to try and salvage pieces of parts.
iPhones (various years): Glued-in batteries and screens, proprietary screws, parts pairing for components like the screen, battery, and camera.
iPads (various years): Glued-in screens and batteries, difficult to open without specialized tools, often leading to screen damage during disassembly.
Apple Watch (various years): Extremely difficult to open and repair due to its small size and intricate design. Many components are glued or soldered.
AirPods (various years): Essentially designed as disposable. DISPOSABLE! The batteries are not user-replaceable, and the internal components are glued together, making repair extremely difficult and often more expensive than replacement. Every person you see wearing those damn white earbuds will have to buy new ones in three years when the battery goes bad. And they charge $300 for those little buggers!
Apple claims it is changing its ways. No it is not! Why would they?
